Kolkata, Oct 24 (IANS) A special court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act on Friday sent Amit Malik, accused of molesting a minor girl at the government-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital in south Kolkata, to police custody till October 31.
The government lawyer informed the court that CCTV footage confirmed the allegation that Mallik took the 15-year-old victim to the toilet of the trauma care wing and molested her there.
In the footage, the accused is clearly seen taking the victim to the scene of the crime – the washroom. The prosecutor also sought permission to conduct DNA test of Mallik and record his confidential statement.
Earlier in the day, the state health department sought a report on the incident from SSKM officials and sought clarification as to how the accused could move around freely inside the hospital despite not being attached to it.
Mallik, a contractual staff member currently posted at NRS Medical College and Hospital, was earlier associated with SSKM and allegedly misused that old link to reach the hospital.
The main charge against Mallick, framed under multiple sections of the POCSO Act, 2012, is molestation of a 15-year-old girl inside an SSKM toilet.
The victim had reached the out-patient department for treatment when the accused, allegedly posing as a doctor, took her to the trauma care washroom and molested her. The girl ran away in shock and narrated her ordeal to her parents.
After the complaint, Bhabanipur police station was informed and the police team arrested the accused on Wednesday night.
Earlier this week, a traffic home-guard was arrested for beating up a woman junior doctor attached to a government hospital in Uluberia in Howrah district, adjacent to Kolkata. The accused home guard also threatened the female doctor with rape.
