Chandigarh, October 25 (IANS) Expressing concern over the alleged incident of a drug-addicted former female athlete selling her own son for just Rs 1.80 lakh, Punjab BJP working president Ashwini Sharma criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government over the incident, saying it shows the biggest failure of the government.
BJP leader Sharma said that the state’s anti-drug campaign has been limited only to papers and photographs.
He said that the female athlete had become addicted to drugs and due to financial constraints she took this dreadful step.
“About two and a half months later, when she realized her mistake, her maternal instincts resurfaced and she applied to the Baretta police station to get her son back, which led to the revelation of the case.”
The BJP MLA said that the drug trade has now spread to every village and town, yet the government’s policies are stuck in advertisements and false claims.
Joining the issue, Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of deliberately ignoring the drug menace that is ravaging Punjab and leaving an indelible stain on its history.
Congress MLA Bajwa highlighted that in a heart-wrenching incident highlighting the horrific depth of Punjab’s drug crisis, a drug-addicted couple from Mansa district sold their five-month-old son to a family in Budhlada for Rs 1.8 lakh – just to feed their addiction.
“A five-month-old baby was sold like a commodity. An innocent life has become a transaction as drugs have eaten away the soul of our society,” Bajwa said in a statement.
He told that mother was once a state level wrestler. She and her husband, both drug addicts, traded their child for their next success.
“This is not a fantasy. This is the reality of Punjab in 2025,” he said.
