A UN delegation is visiting lebanon He said that he came on Saturday beirut To explore options for the border area israel After the tenure of the UN peacekeeping force ends at the end of next year.
The comments from the team representing the 15 members of the UN Security Council came a day after Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam told him his country would need a follow-on force in southern Lebanon to fill the void once the tenure of UN peacekeepers ends.
The UN Security Council voted unanimously in August to end UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon UnifileIn late 2026 – almost five decades after the force was deployed. The multinational force has played a key role in monitoring the security situation in the region, including during Israel’s-Hezbollah War last year.
One of UNIFIL’s main missions is the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 which ended the 34-day Israel–Hezbollah war in 2006. The same resolution was used to end the latest 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war that ended with a US-brokered ceasefire in November last year.
“We also wanted to use the opportunity of this visit to examine options for the implementation of Resolution 1701 following UNIFIL’s departure from Lebanon,” said Samuel Obogar, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the United Nations and President of the Security Council.
“We await the Secretary-General’s recommendations on this as well,” Obogar said in a brief statement. “As you can imagine, this is a topic that will be intensely negotiated throughout 2026.”
The delegation met top officials of the country as well as the army commander during their visit to Lebanon. On Saturday the team went to southern Lebanon where they visited the border area with Israel.
The latest Israel-Hezbollah war began on October 7, 2023, a day after Hamas attacked southern Israel, with Hezbollah firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinian Hamas militants. The Israeli response, which included bombings and ground operations, severely weakened Hezbollah last year.
