Thane:
A 37-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison soon after he was booked for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in Thane district, police said on Monday.
A case was registered against the man for rape and under other sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act on Saturday night in a village in Murbad taluka.
“An FIR of rape was registered on Saturday night and the police started searching for the accused. When he came to know that the police had registered the case and were searching for him, the accused reached his friend’s house and drank alcohol. Police Inspector Pramod Babar, citing preliminary investigation, said, “Poison. He died in the hospital.”
According to the FIR, the accused, whose name has been withheld by the police, allegedly repeatedly raped a teenage girl from his village between January 18 and February 15 after threatening her to circulate her private photographs. He had also threatened to kill the victim’s parents.
Further investigation is underway, a police officer said.
