Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 campaign went from bad to worse as the five-time champions suffered their seventh defeat in 10 matches on Tuesday. With the defeat, MI’s entry hopes are also over. Since the start of IPL 2024, MI has been struggling with many issues. The change in captaincy from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya is perhaps the biggest of them all. Since that decision, it seemed like even the MI loyalists had turned against their own favorite team. That MI has been losing consistently hasn’t helped either.

On Tuesday, the MI batsmen put in another disappointing performance as they could only manage 144/7 in 20 overs. Captain Hardik Pandya was out for zero while Rohit Sharma was out for 4 runs. LSG achieved the target in 19.2 overs with four wickets remaining.

After the match, Irfan Pathan, a member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, blamed Hardik Pandya for MI’s dreadful performance.

“Last year, Mumbai Indians, the team that qualified, did not have Jasprit Bumrah, but this season they got his services. Yet they are in this position. Completely because the team was not managed well on the field. A lot of mistakes were made by Captain Hardik, Pandya wrote on Twitter.

Speaking on Star Sports, former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta spoke on whether Hardik Pandya’s poor form in the IPL will be a factor in his selection in the T20 World Cup squad: “Not so much. I don’t think so. I mean Obviously, IPL is a very important tournament but you also have to keep in mind what credit he has achieved in the past, how he has performed in the past and I think Hardik has done OK.

“We have seen him bat lower down the order, and that’s where he will be expected to bat. He has played some good innings; he has bowled decently. With what he has done so far, I wouldn’t be too worried.” IPL. I think he is a match winner with the bat and sometimes with the ball, but it also depends on the kind of pitches we can expect in the Caribbean. Gets more help.”
