Taipei:

– More than 80 earthquakes, the strongest at a magnitude of 6.3, struck Taiwan’s east coast beginning Monday night and early Tuesday, and some shook buildings in the capital Taipei, the island’s weather administration said.

The tremors were largely centered on the rural eastern county of Hualien, where a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on April 3 killed at least 14 people. Taiwan has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks since then.

The fire department in Hualien said early Tuesday that a hotel that was already damaged on April 3 and was no longer operating was now leaning slightly on its side.

However, there is no news of any casualty.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

A 2016 earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people, while a magnitude 7.3 quake in 1999 killed more than 2,000.
