Four people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after demonstration case Crown Jewels But Tower of London Apparently covered with food.
The vault where the artifacts are displayed, known as the Jewel House, has been closed to the public as police investigate a possible attack.
Police began an investigation after reports that the display case containing the State Crown had been damaged.
The Metropolitan Police said officers attended the scene on Saturday morning following reports of criminal damage.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Police were called to the Tower of London at 09:48am on Saturday, December 6 following reports of criminal damage to a display case containing the State Crown.
“It was reported that four protesters threw suspicious food at the scene, before two people left the scene.
“Officers worked closely with City of London Police and security officers and four people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. They have been taken into custody.”
Police initially said the Tower of London was closed to the public, but clarified that it was only the Jewel House that was closed.
The Tower of London, built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, now attracts more than three million visitors per year. The tower displays the Crown Jewels collection and the Coronation Regalia are at the center of this exhibition.
It includes the Imperial State Crown, worn by the monarch at the end of the coronation ceremony and on ceremonial occasions such as the State Opening of Parliament.
The Coronation Regalia was created for the coronation of King Charles II in 1661 and has been kept safe in the Tower of London ever since.
