Agartala/Guwahati, November 21 (IANS) Tremors of a moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale were felt in several northeastern states adjacent to Bangladesh on Friday. The officers provided this information.

Disaster management officials from several northeastern states confirmed that there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property due to the earthquake.

Earthquake tremors were also felt in many parts of West Bengal and panic spread among the people. However, there were no casualties or damage to property reported from anywhere in the state till the time the report was filed.

A disaster management official in Agartala said the quake occurred at a depth of about 10 km, with its epicenter located at Madhabadi in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. Tremors were felt in Tripura, Assam, Mizoram and Meghalaya, the states that share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh media quoted the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as saying that the earthquake was felt in Dhaka and several other parts of the country. Tremors were also reported from Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sitakund, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Bogura, Barishal and Moulvibazar in Bangladesh, a leading daily reported.

Friday’s tremor was the fifth earthquake in the northeast region this week and the 18th so far during November, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). Of the 18 earthquakes, seven were recorded in Assam, five in Arunachal Pradesh, three in Manipur and one each in Tripura, Meghalaya and Sikkim.

Several tremors were felt simultaneously in many states of the North-East. Earthquake tremors were felt in many states, especially Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, on 2, 6, 11, 12 and 18 November.

Analysis of NCS data showed that more than one earthquake has struck the northeastern region every week this month, most of which had a magnitude between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale.

Earthquakes are relatively common in the mountainous northeastern region, which includes eight states, as it falls among the six most earthquake-prone regions in the world. Repeated tremors, mostly mild to moderate, in Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya have alarmed authorities and continue to put pressure on public and private builders to adopt earthquake-resistant construction practices. ,
