Kolkata, Nov 15 (IANS) A political firestorm broke out in West Bengal on Saturday over a controversial statement made by four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member and senior Calcutta High Court lawyer Kalyan Banerjee in which he linked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the car blast in New Delhi earlier this week that killed 12 people.
Speaking to media persons, Banerjee said that the blast was deliberately carried out just a day before the second phase of voting in the Bihar Assembly elections, to create a sympathy wave in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The car blast took place near the Red Fort metro station in Delhi on the evening of 10 November, the second phase of the two-phase Bihar elections on 11 November.
On Friday, after the announcement of Bihar assembly election results, where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won by a landslide, the Prime Minister said the Bihar results have paved the way for the BJP’s victory in West Bengal for the 2026 state assembly elections.
“I want to assure the people of West Bengal that “Jungle Raj” will end in West Bengal in 2026,” the Prime Minister said on Friday.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s comments regarding the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday said the Delhi car blast was deliberately carried out just a day before the second phase of Bihar Assembly elections, just to create a sympathy wave in favor of the BJP, and also held the Prime Minister responsible for masterminding that conspiracy.
“The Prime Minister has destroyed the democratic atmosphere in India. Hundreds of people are dying in the country. He won by planting a bomb in the car near the Red Fort metro station the night before the second phase of Bihar elections. The Prime Minister himself has established ‘Jungle Raj’ in the country. When you were the Chief Minister in Gujarat, you were killing people. You established Jungle Raj in Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. In contrast, the people of West Bengal are at peace. The people of West Bengal gave a befitting reply.” BJP in 2021. They will again give a befitting reply to the BJP in 2026,ā Banerjee said.
Journalist-turned-politician and BJP state general secretary Jagannath Chattopadhyay said that there is a competition going on between Kalyan Banerjee and a state spokesperson of Trinamool Congress as to who is more capable in abusing the country’s Prime Minister.
Chattopadhyay said, “The more they use such abuses, the more popularity the BJP will gain in West Bengal. Our Prime Minister is in the hearts of the common people.”
