Patna, Nov 14 (IANS) The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday announced that Janata Dal (United) leader and political veteran Anant Singh has registered his victory from Mokama assembly constituency in Bihar.
According to the official website of the Election Commission, Singh has defeated his main rival Veena Devi of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin of over 28,000.
Veena Devi, wife of another prominent political figure and rival of Anant Singh, ‘Bahubali’ Suraj Bhan Singh, has lost.
The third major contender in Mokama, Priyadarshi Piyush of Jan Suraj Party (JSP), also emerged as the frontrunner, but lagged behind Singh and Devi.
Anant Singh, who is currently in jail after his arrest in the murder case of a JSP supporter, enjoys significant support in his constituency.
There are posters in Mokama reading, “The prison gate will be broken, our lion will be released”, reflecting the local excitement over his victory.
Political analysts say Singh’s continued popularity despite legal troubles underlined his stronghold in Mokama, where caste loyalty and long-standing political influence played a decisive role.
According to ECI trends as of 4.30 pm, counting is underway on the remaining assembly seats, with the NDA leading on 202 seats and the Grand Alliance leading on only 34 seats.
Voting was held in two phases on 6 and 11 November.
The counting process for all 243 assembly seats began at 8 am, starting with the verification of postal ballots. This was followed by counting of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes from 8.30 am, which took place under elaborate multi-layered security arrangements across the state.
In the outgoing assembly, the NDA has 131 seats, including BJP’s 80, JD(U)’s 45, HAM(S)’s four and two independents. The opposition faction has 111 seats, of which RJD has 77, Congress has 19, CPI (ML) has 11, CPI (M) has two and CPI has two.
