Visakhapatnam, November 4 (IANS) Mild earthquake tremors were felt in Visakhapatnam and Alluri Sitharamaraju districts of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.
An earthquake of 3.7 magnitude struck Alluri district of north coastal Andhra on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The earthquake caused panic among the residents of some areas. Hearing the loud noise, people ran out of their houses. However, there were no reports of any casualties or damage.
Tremors were felt in Visakhapatnam from 4.16 am to 4.20 am
Tremors were felt in many parts of Visakhapatnam city and its outskirts, including Arilova, Adivivaram, Madhavadhara, Akkayyapalem, HB Colony, Allipuram, Endada, Bhimili, Simhachalam and Pendurthi areas.
According to the National Center of Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was at G Madugula in Alluri Seetharamaraju district at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter of the earthquake was 110 km away from the port city of Visakhapatnam.
Experts described it as a shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale. He said there was no need for people to be worried as the tremors were mild due to structural adjustments. He told that this area is considered tectonically stable.
According to the National Center for Seismology, an earthquake of 4.7 magnitude was felt in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, China and Bhutan early Tuesday. Its center was four km away from Shigaste in Tibet.
On December 4, 2024, an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude struck parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Medaram in Mulugu district of Telangana was the epicenter of the earthquake.
The intensity of the earthquake was higher in the districts along the Godavari river in both the Telugu states. This was the second earthquake measuring more than 5 on the Richter scale in the region in the last 55 years.
The region was hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on April 13, 1969, with its epicenter at Bhadrachalam.
According to scientists, both earthquakes were linked to the Godavari Rift Valley, which is a fault zone.
