A man suspected of being the “pillow rapist” in a series of rapes that occurred in South Florida in the 1980s was convicted in another attack on Monday.
Miami-Dade County Jurors found Robert Kohler, 66, guilty of sexual assault, kidnapping and robbery after deliberating for less than two hours. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 24.
Monday’s sentencing involves a woman who was 22 in 1984 when someone broke into her southwest Miami-Dade County home and raped her. Kohler had been sentenced to 17 years in prison for a similar attack on a 25-year-old woman about three years earlier in 1983.
Authorities say the “pillow rapist” sneaked into his victims’ homes at night and terrorized them. The attacker used pillows or other clothing to cover his face – or the faces of his victims – before attacking them, tying them up, and stealing from their homes.
The attacks attracted widespread media attention in South Florida and authorities created a task force to investigate. Officials say the path had gone cold by 2020 dna The police reached Kohler after he beat up one of his relatives.
Prosecutors have said they have linked Kohler’s DNA to at least 25 attacks, but there may be as many as 40 victims.
