Navi Mumbai, Oct 29 (IANS) The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was formally inducted as the designated security agency at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday.

The induction will be done over a period of a few months in a phased manner. Initial deployment of 900 security personnel was made in the first phase.

With this induction, Navi Mumbai airport becomes the 71st airport to come under CISF cover under its Special Aviation Security Group (ASG).

“CISF will provide comprehensive security cover for the entire airport and its associated facilities. An initial strength of 900 personnel has been deployed against the sanctioned strength of 1,840, which will be progressively increased in line with the airport’s growth in passenger and cargo operations,” the lead security agency said in a press statement.

All security arrangements will be implemented as per the latest guidelines of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), covering both core and non-core airport security functions.

The formal induction ceremony was held at Navi Mumbai International Airport and was attended by CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan as the chief guest. ADG (Airport Sector) Binita Thakur also participated in it.

At the ceremony, Captain BVJK Sharma, CEO, NMIA, symbolically handed over the keys of the airport to Sunit Sharma, Senior Commandant and Chief Aerodrome Security Officer (CASO), NMIA.

Speaking on the occasion, CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan said, “CISF is committed to ensuring the highest standards of aviation security at NMIA in line with global standards. Our personnel are trained, equipped and ready to deliver a safe, efficient and passenger-friendly environment from day one.”

Captain BVJK Sharma, CEO, NMIAL, said, “We are delighted to welcome the CISF to Navi Mumbai International Airport. The induction of the CISF is a major step in NMIAL’s preparedness to welcome passengers, reflecting our shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards of passenger safety and airport security while providing a world-class passenger experience to the passengers.

CISF personnel will be responsible for access control, pre-embarkation security checks, perimeter and air security, cargo security and specialized units like Quick Response Teams (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and K9 units.

They will work in close coordination with local police and other agencies and are expected to conduct regular contingency exercises to maintain the highest level of preparedness.
