The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has urged British citizens to visit the government website to receive updates and assistance as authorities ordered people to stay indoors as the storm, the world’s most powerful so far this year, continues to wreak havoc.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said, “The FCDO stands ready to help British citizens 24/7. We have set up a crisis center at the Foreign Office, including support from the Ministry of Defence, and we are deploying specialist rapid deployment teams to provide consular support in the field.”

Ms Cooper said more than 50,000 dual citizens live in Jamaica, as well as thousands of British citizens who could also be affected by the disaster.

Some Britons have expressed disappointment at the government’s response.

David Rowe, an IT manager from Hertfordshire, said he felt “completely gutted” after paying £3,500 for last-minute flights home before airports closed.

The advice should have come last week – ‘Do not travel’ – because many travel companies rely on FCDO guidance,” Mr Rowe told the PA news agency.

“This could have been prevented with better action by the UK government.”
