Thomas Frank Wants Tottenham Hotspur to go all the way Carabao Cup this season, but raised questions as to why the semi-finals were still two-legged.
Spurs travel to holders newcastle Heading into the fourth round on Wednesday, Franks will be keen to remain on track for more silverware after ending a 17-year drought with Europa League success in May under predecessor Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham play 60 matches in the 2024-25 campaign and the midweek trip to St James’ Park will be the club’s 15th this season, leading Frank to suggest a change to a domestic competition often under scrutiny amid an ever-expanding football calendar.
“Well, one thing I’m thinking about is that there should only be one semi-final,” Frank said.
“I think there are two reasons. For smaller clubs, it’s a lot easier to just play one game if you want to beat a bigger club, so we really want someone to come out and it’s not the same boring same teams winning – except Spurs of course!
“Then we have to leave one semi-final for everyone who plays so many games. It should only be one.
“If it’s about money, someone needs to fix it. If it’s the Premier League giving money to the EFL (English Football League), because as far as I understand it, it’s because of them. So someone needs to fix it. It should be very, very simple.”
Frank missed out on the semi-finals last season after losing 3-1 to eventual winners Newcastle at Brentford’s St James’ Park in the last eight.
Newcastle won the competition and secured their first domestic trophy in 70 years. eddie howe Made history as Magpies boss.
There are similarities between Howe and Frank, as both established unheralded clubs in the Premier League in the size of Bournemouth and Brentford respectively, before earning jobs at teams with greater resources.
Spurs head coach Frank said: “I admire Eddie a lot.
“Remarkable job at Bournemouth. I followed their team, followed what they did. Brilliant.”
“And then he got the big job or the big job at Newcastle and the way they qualified for the Champions League twice, I think, and certainly when the cup came out, he transformed the club.
“I think that’s quite impressive. He’s a clever tactician, he clearly knows what he wants, is very consistent and I think he’s done very well.”
Carabao Cup The trophy was the first major trophy won in Howe’s career.
When Frank was told that the Newcastle boss could now be declared the winner, he retorted: “What’s the winner?
“Is the winner the one who wins something? Or – now I’m not talking about football coaches, just about people – is the winner the one who continues to work every day without stopping, faces setbacks, keeps moving forward. Is that a winner?
“But the notion is always about the big trophy. I would love to win. We would love to win.”
“I think if you win something it’s easier to call it a winner – so that’s the aim.”
