Chandigarh, October 28 (IANS) In a major operation based on intelligence, Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence in Firozpur has busted a cross-border drug cartel and arrested its operator and recovered 5 kg of heroin from his possession. This information was given by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.
The accused has been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gora, resident of Habib Wala village, Firozpur.
Apart from seizing 5 kg of heroin, the police teams have also seized Gora’s motorcycle which he was riding.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation indicated that the consignment was smuggled from across the border by Pakistan-based smugglers.
Further investigation is underway to uncover the entire network.
Sharing operational details, Assistant Inspector General (Ferozepur) Gursevak Singh Brar said that acting on the input, the police conducted a covert operation in the Ferozepur area, during which the suspect Gurpreet was apprehended.
He said that the accused was going to supply this consignment to another operator on the instructions of a Pakistan-based smuggler.
The identity of another operator and his extensive network as well as the role of the Pakistan-based smuggler are being thoroughly investigated, he said.
Earlier this week, the Special Operations Cell of the police in Amritsar caught a member of a terror network and recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), weighing about 2.5 kg, filled with high-grade RDX and equipped with a timer for detonation.
The accused has been identified as Manpreet Singh alias Tiddi, resident of Kotla Tarkhana village, Amritsar. He was earlier involved in two criminal cases registered at police stations of Batala and Kalanaur.
After spending about a year and a half in Gurdaspur and Amritsar jails, he was released in February, and subsequently resumed his criminal activities.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused was acting on the instructions of his handlers based in Armenia, UK and Germany, who were receiving instructions from the Pakistan-based mastermind of the banned terrorist organisation.
