Ahmedabad: To ease the payment of traffic e-challan fines, the Gujarat government has launched a new facility that will allow vehicle owners to pay fines online through Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

Under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Shanghvi and state police chief Vikas Sahay, the state traffic branch of Gujarat Police in collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI) has launched this digital initiative to make fine payments more accessible and transparent.

Earlier, motorists could pay the fine through the ‘One Nation One Challan’ system using options like net banking, debit/credit card, UPI or POS machine. Now, with the involvement of BBPS, users can directly pay their traffic fine through popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM Pay and YONO by selecting ‘State Traffic Branch, Gujarat’ in the payment menu.

The funds collected will be processed as per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, ensuring verification and safe settlement of payments. The initiative is expected to increase transparency, streamline fine collection and strengthen enforcement of traffic rules across the state. Officials said the move is a major step towards the state’s ‘Digital Gujarat’ vision – which will make citizen services faster, simpler and fully integrated with national digital payment platforms.

Gujarat’s traffic management system has undergone a major overhaul aimed at improving safety, reducing congestion and ensuring smooth mobility in cities and highways.

The state has implemented Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in major urban centers like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, which integrates real-time monitoring through AI-based cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and command and control centres.

Along with enforcement, officials are emphasizing on public awareness campaigns, driver education and road safety audits to reduce accidents.

These combined measures – supported by digital tools, better coordination between agencies and citizen participation – are helping Gujarat move towards a smarter, safer and more transparent traffic management ecosystem.
