Patna, Oct 27 (IANS) In a major action ahead of Bihar Assembly elections, Bettiah Police seized a huge consignment of India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) during a special operation in Gaunaha police station area early on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, police recovered 1,128 liters of IMFL concealed in 122 cartons from two Bolero vehicles and arrested one smuggler, while three others managed to escape.
According to the police, around 12:20 am on Monday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shaurya Suman received information that a huge quantity of liquor was being taken towards Ramnagar.
Taking immediate action, a joint team of District Technical Branch and Gaunaha Police Station was formed under his supervision.
The team stopped the vehicles near Madhopur Sareh, where the smugglers tried to escape leaving the vehicle.
Police caught Neeraj Kumar, son of late Shambhu Sah, resident of Purani Bazaar ward number one under Shikarpur police station of West Champaran district.
Upon investigation, the police recovered liquor cartons and seized both the vehicles.
A case has been registered against the vehicle owner, driver and two other accused under Gaunaha police station case number 159/25.
SP Shaurya Suman said that to curb illegal liquor smuggling, continuous raids and surveillance campaigns are going on across the district.
Suman said, “Bettiah Police is fully prepared to maintain law and order during the election period and ensure strict compliance with the model code of conduct.”
The joint operation is being conducted by the district administration, police, excise department, income tax department, Narcotics Control Bureau, Customs and CM Flying Squad teams to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
To maintain peace, strict action is being taken against anti-social and disruptive elements.
An Election Commission official said the primary goal of these measures is to ensure that voters in Bihar can freely exercise their right to vote without any hindrance.
