After an injury to Jones in late 2023, when he held the heavyweight title, Aspinall defeated Sergei Pavlovich to win the interim belt. Twelve months later, Jones returned to face divisional legend Stipe Miocic instead of fighting Aspinall, who made the rare decision to defend the interim title in July 2024. Both Jones and Aspinall won their bouts via stoppage.
The 38-year-old Jones then took on Aspinall, who ultimately retired from mixed martial arts this summer, allowing the UFC to crown Aspinall the undisputed champion.
But Britain’s first defense of undisputed gold ended unexpectedly when Gane punched holes in both his eyes.
Many fans expected Jones to directly tease Aspinall over the incident, but he instead chose to take an indirect dig at the 32-year-old – Tackling with light-heavyweight champion Alex PereiraWho called Jones on Saturday.
“Alex, I’m ready to bring the highest skill level to the White House,” Jones wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I appreciate the respect you show me, let’s dance.”

Aspinall said on Saturday during a cageside interview before going to hospital: “I’ve been hit pretty deep in the eyeball. What the hell, why are you screaming? What should I do about it? I didn’t get hit, I can’t see!”
“That’s bulls***. The fight was just going on. Look at this, a double eye poke,” he continued, pointing to the slow motion replay on the big screen.
France’s Gane also came under criticism for the way he conducted his post-fight interview in the Octagon. “I’m very sorry about this,” he said, to the crowd, for Tom Aspinallfor myself. This is the game.”
Jones, a two-time former UFC light-heavyweight champion, knocked out 35-year-old Gane in two minutes to win the vacant heavyweight strap in 2023.
