New Delhi, Oct 27 (IANS) Taking serious note of the acid attack on a 20-year-old woman in northwest Delhi, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Monday directed Police Commissioner Satish Golcha to take strict action against the culprits.

“He has directed the police commissioner to ensure that the culprits are arrested at the earliest and given the strictest punishment under the law,” a Raj Niwas official said.

“LG has taken the recent unfortunate incident of acid attack in the capital extremely seriously,” the official said in a post on Twitter.

Sunday’s incident that caught the LG’s attention involved a 20-year-old woman whose hands were burnt after she was allegedly attacked with acid by a stalker and his two associates.

The incident occurred near Lakshmi Bai College in Ashok Vihar area of northwest Delhi, according to police officials, who said they have started searching for the accused after collecting clues from CCTV footage.

The victim, a second-year student in a private institute, was on her way to attend an additional class when the accused stopped her near the college.

“He was stopped by the main accused, Jitendra, and his two associates, Ishaan and Armaan, who were on a motorcycle,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Bhisham Singh said in a statement.

According to the woman’s statement, Ishaan gave a bottle to Armaan, who threw acid on him.

He instinctively raised his hands to protect his face, both his hands were burnt while the assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The injured woman was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors administered initial treatment and informed the police.

A team of forensic and crime experts later visited the site to collect samples and evidence. Preliminary investigation reveals that the main accused, Jitendra – a resident of Mukundpur, the same area where the victim lives – had been stalking her for several months.

According to reports, there was a heated argument between the two about a month ago, after which the harassment allegedly increased.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Indian Justice Code (BNS), including acid attack and criminal conspiracy.

The incident has once again raised concerns over women’s safety and easy availability of corrosive substances in the national capital.

Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) protested outside the college demanding strict punishment to the accused and concrete reforms to curb the sale of acid.
