Ahmedabad, Oct 27 (IANS) Gujarat Police on March 1 launched a pioneering initiative, GP-SMASH (Gujarat Police – Social Media Monitoring, Awareness and Systematic Handling), which has successfully resolved over 850 complaints, a step towards responsive and accountable policing, officials said here on Monday.
The project, launched by Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay, aims to create a real-time communication bridge between citizens and law enforcement through social media. Officials said that this is being done under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi.
Through GP-SMASH, concerns, complaints and suggestions of citizens posted on platforms like X are being resolved within a few hours. A state-level dedicated team works 24/7 to monitor posts related to law and order, traffic, cyber fraud, corruption and other public complaints, and ensure quick redressal by tagging the concerned district or range officials.
Each case is tracked until resolved, with updates shared publicly on the same post for transparency. This initiative ensures rapid coordination and follow-up action at three monitoring levels – State, Range and District.
According to officials, GP-SMASH is not just a digital surveillance system, but a movement towards a tech-enabled, citizen-centric policing model. This has enhanced the sense of security and trust among the public, making citizens feel that Gujarat Police is just a click away. Backed by a proactive, technology-driven and community-oriented police force, Gujarat has consistently earned a reputation as one of the safest states in India.
Gujarat Police, led by the state Home Department, has adopted modernization through initiatives such as GP-Smash, i-Pragati and predictive policing systems that integrate technology with public service. With strong surveillance networks, real-time monitoring and quick response mechanisms, the state ensures that both urban and rural areas remain safe.
Beyond enforcement, Gujarat Police emphasizes citizen engagement – encouraging trust through transparency, prompt complaint redressal and social media outreach. From tackling cyber crime and traffic management to ensuring women’s safety through helplines and dedicated cells, the force has evolved into a model of people-friendly policing, officials said.
