Kolkata, Oct 27 (IANS) A purported video has gone viral in which a Trinamool Congress MLA can be heard threatening to “burn” BJP leaders and workers alive if the name of even a single genuine voter is removed from the voter list following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) proposed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in West Bengal.

“Otherwise, we will not have any headache on SIR. But if names of genuine voters are removed from the voter list after SIR, I will burn BJP leaders and workers alive. They are trying to pollute the environment in West Bengal. They are trying to deprive people of their voting rights in the name of SIR. I am asking everyone to be alert in the current situation,” Nisith Kumar Malik, Trinamool Congress The MLA from Bardhaman (North) assembly constituency in East Burdwan district, was heard saying in the video.

He reportedly said this while talking to local media persons in the district on Sunday afternoon. However, IANS could not verify the authenticity of the video that went viral.

He also claimed that the SIR has also created panic among voters from the Hindu community, especially those who came as refugees from Bangladesh like Matuas and Rajbanshis.

“I know they are nervous. But I request them to have faith in the state government and the Trinamool Congress. We will ensure that not even a single genuine voter’s name is removed from the voter list,” Malik said.

BJP spokesperson Soumyajit Bandopadhyay said such threatening comments from Trinamool Congress leaders are nothing new and such comments prove their ideological and political bankruptcy.

This is not the first time that Trinamool Congress leaders have given such threats.

Earlier this month, two members of the state cabinet, namely, Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department, Tajmul Hussain, and Minister of State for Irrigation and Waterways Department, Sabina Yasmin, were heard publicly threatening riots on the SIR.

In the same month, Trinamool Congress MP and former minister Partha Bhowmik had said in a public meeting that “West Bengal will be in turmoil if the name of even a single genuine voter is removed from the voter list after the SIR.”

He called upon people to “chaser and detain BJP leaders in various parts of the state if the name of even a single genuine voter is removed from the voter list”.

On October 9, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing the media, had said that she would not tolerate the removal of the name of any particular community from the voter list.

“I am asking them (ECI) not to play with fire. The crisis still persists in West Bengal due to the natural disaster. Many people’s houses have been washed away due to floods. In such a situation, where will they submit the documents required for SIR? Some people are on leave due to the ongoing festival season. How will they submit the documents?” The Chief Minister had said.
