IMD issues orange alert for three districts of Maharashtra, possibility of moderate rain and storm

New Delhi, October 27 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for three districts of Maharashtra and predicted moderate rain and thundershowers with lightning from Monday to Tuesday, along with strong winds at a speed of 30-40 kmph, the weather department said in a press statement.

The statement on Sunday said that the three districts of Maharashtra where orange alert has been issued are Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik.

For Dhule district, from 8:30 pm Sunday night to 8:30 am Monday, IMD has predicted thunderstorm with lightning, moderate rain at isolated places and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, while light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely over Dhule on Tuesday.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorm with lightning, moderate rain and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places from 8:30 am Monday to 8:30 pm Tuesday for Nandurbar district.

IMD has predicted thunderstorm, heavy rain with lightning at isolated places and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph for Nashik district from 8:30 am on Monday. At the same time, IMD has predicted thunderstorm, moderate rain and strong winds at the speed of 40-50 km per hour with lightning at different places till 8:30 am on Tuesday.

The IMD also announced on Sunday that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, causing heavy rainfall in many districts of West Bengal between October 28 and 31.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression forming over the Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into an intense and severe cyclonic storm by October 28.

The weather system, which was centered near latitude 11.0°N and longitude 87.7°E as of 11:30 pm on Saturday (October 25), moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 8 kmph in the last six hours.

Presently, it is located about 550 km west of Port Blair, 850 km east-southeast of Chennai, 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and about 890 km southeast of Kakinada.

The IMD has predicted that the system will intensify into a cyclonic storm over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday (October 27) morning.

The storm is expected to strengthen further as it moves north-westwards and later north-northwestwards, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning (October 28).

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has prepared an action plan for relief and essential supplies in pre-cyclone preparedness for Cyclone Montha.

State Civil Supplies Minister N. Manohar said the action plan includes stock status of Public Distribution System (PDS) items, fuel inventory management, paddy procurement steps, food supply to relief shelters and post-cyclone relief distribution.

“Andhra Pradesh government has prepared an action report detailing pre-cyclone preparedness measures for Cyclone Montha to ensure preparedness before landfall,” Manohar said in an official statement late Saturday night.

The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The IMD said in a bulletin late on Sunday night that Cyclone Montha will start bringing light to moderate rain over some districts of South Bengal including Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Howrah, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and Hooghly from October 27.

It said that between October 28 and October 31, heavy rain will occur at one or two places in North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Purulia, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of South Bengal.

India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for many districts of Andhra Pradesh in view of the severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal.

Due to the storm, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in different areas.

Red alert has been issued for several districts including Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore.
