pop star Nelly Furtado Amid attacks from body shamers on social media, she has announced that she is retiring from live performances for the “foreseeable future” in favor of other creative endeavors.

“I’ve enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music because I’ve always seen it as a hobby, I was lucky enough to make it as a career,” she said in a lengthy statement. “I will always be known as a songwriter”.

Furtado’s announcement comes months after online trolls criticized her figure following a performance at the Boardmasters Festival.
The “Say It Right” singer later hit back at critics of Manchester Pride after she performed at the event in an oversized T-shirt, which illustrated the body of a woman wearing a crop top and mini skirt. Many saw the choice of outfit as a response to body shamers.
Earlier this year, Furtado also shared a bikini selfie and said she was adopting “body neutrality” as part of her 2025 wellness mindset, saying she has found new confidence and self-love despite the increasing beauty pressures she faces in her career.

Furtado rose to fame in 2000 with the hit single “I’m Like a Bird” from her debut album. Wow! NellyWhich sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.

Addressing her recent resurgence, thanking fans on TikTok, she said: “It’s been surreal and joyful to have so many people rediscover my music. It’s been so much fun to embrace this opportunity, to be on stage again and see up close the true enduring power of good music. It’s really made me believe in magic.”
