harry brook Wants England To take a page from his book after the Yorkshireman’s breathtaking century in their four-wicket defeat new zealand In Mount Maunganui.
England were struggling at five runs for three wickets in the first ODI When Brooks came to the crease in favorable seam bowling conditions his condition worsened as his score dropped to 33 for five.
Brook was the only batsman among the top seven to reach double figures and saved the total from disgrace by scoring 135 from 101 balls, which was 60.54 per cent of his team’s 223 – a record for England in ODIs.
While his innings bodes well with less than four weeks to go before the Ashes begins, Brook’s Test teammates Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett and Joe Root could not get going in their first innings of the tour.
However, Brook feels his top-order teammates could have done more to compensate for opening bowlers Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes, who shared six wickets in the first half, which were instrumental in the Black Caps’ victory.
Asked what was going through his mind when he came out to bat at the end of the second over, the England white-ball captain replied: “Get yourself in and then try and hit it.
“Obviously it wasn’t an ideal start but it was a do-or-die moment. I always like to try to take attacking options and put them under as much pressure as possible.
“The question I would ask is can we maybe try a little bit more? I think so. I think we can try and get them out a little bit more of their length and take advantage of their slightly off balls.”
Henry dismissed Smith on the first ball before Folks, playing in his second ODI, edged past Duckett for a four and then dismissed Root with an inswinger and Jacob Bethel with late away movement.
While England’s top three players are certain to play in the Ashes, barring injury, Bethell is attempting to replace Ollie Pope but has just two more innings in New Zealand to stake his claim.
Asked if he was worried about England’s top four, he said: “It’s certainly not a cause for concern, they’re all incredible players.
“There is a reason why they are playing cricket for England – they are the best four batsmen in the country.
“It’s just one of those days, you’ve got three Test batsmen in the top three, Rooty, Ducky and Smudge don’t come, on the second day they all score 30 and we’re off to a great start.”
braydon carseyOne of England’s fast bowlers for the tour of Australia next month took three wickets, leaving New Zealand at 66 for four, but poor fielding let down the tourists.
He dropped three catches as Michael Bracewell was dismissed for two and Daryl Mitchell for 33, the former making 51 and the latter making 78 as the Kiwis won the match with 13.2 overs to spare.
“I think we are one of the best fielding teams in the world. Everyone drops catches. I have dropped a lot of catches in my time. You never know if we take a catch but unfortunately we didn’t,” Brook said.
