The referee was replaced at half-time in Liverpool’s Premier League match at Brentford after Simon Hooper was injured.

Fourth official Tim Robinson replaced the referee for the second half at the Brentford Community Stadium.

According to a report by TNT Sports, Hooper suffered a hamstring injury during the first half of the game.

Robinson then gave Brentford a penalty when Virgil van Dijk was adjudged to have made contact with Dango Ouattara on the line, with VAR Chris Kavanagh directing a counter-attack after Robinson was awarded a free-kick.

Premier League Match Center said: “Following a VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision to award a free-kick to Brentford.”

After an uneventful first half in west London, Brentford led Liverpool 2-1 at the break.

Kevin Schade doubled Brentford’s lead on the counter-attack, about a minute after referee Hooper rejected a penalty appeal when Cody Gakpo went down under a challenge from Nathan Collins in the box.

VAR Kavanagh agreed with Hooper’s on-field decision and a statement confirmed: “The referee’s call to award no penalty to Liverpool was examined and confirmed by VAR – with it also ruling that there was no foul by Collins on Gakpo.”

Liverpool’s Milos Kerkez scored a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time of the first half. At least three minutes were shown.

The restart was delayed after half-time so that Robinson could warm up during the interval.

Liverpool and Brentford players then came onto the pitch in front of the officials, with Hooper replacing Robinson on the touchline.

With two minutes remaining Salah scored his first goal in seven matches. But the equalizer could not be achieved and Liverpool suffered its fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.
