Reuben Amorim When his team were on their way to a crucial 4–2 win against a bogey team, he joked that “it wouldn’t be possible to face Manchester United without a little bit of suffering”. brighton,

The Red Devils had lost six of their last seven Premier League Meetings with the Seagulls, who were looking to secure a fourth consecutive win at Old Trafford.

But Brighton left North West empty-handed despite hitting back from Matheus Cunha’s first United goal, which was a deflected casemiro effort and Brian Mbumo’s second half drive.

Danny Welbeck’s free-kick and Charalampos Kostoulas’ stoppage-time header set up a nervy conclusion, only Mbeumo’s second ensured a third consecutive win.

“It was really important (to win again), as well as the performance,” boss Amorim said.

“We had to make different plays at different moments of the game, and I think the players understood really well what to do at each moment.

“In the end we have to suffer a little but without suffering a little we will not become Manchester United!

“But I think we deserved to win against a very, very good team, a team that is really difficult to put pressure on but we performed well.”

Amorim felt it was a “more complete performance” than the previous weekend’s impressive 2–1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool as he praised the overall performance as well as certain individuals.

The Portuguese singled out summer signings Cunha and Mbeumo for praise and cited Casemiro as an example for others who rose from the periphery of his squad to become a key performer.

“I think he brings a lot of experience, he’s an example for everybody,” Amorim said. “In the beginning he was behind every midfielder, even behind Toby (Collier, currently on loan at West Brom).

“But he struggled and worked and now he is back in the national team. He is very important for us.

“Today he ran a lot, he had to run so high and then come back and he is doing that, so I am really happy with him and other people need to look at Casemiro.

“We understand that football can change really quickly. You just need to work.

“To me, if you’re the best or I think you’re the best to play the game, then if you do the right things you’ll play the game.”

brighton counterpart Fabian Herzeler He did not want to officiate after the match, saying that his team was to blame for the result rather than any decision by the referee.

“It’s easy to summarize this game,” he said. “We made a lot of easy mistakes on our end.

“We gave the balls away too easily, you can’t win games like that. I think overall we had control of the game, we had good actions.

“We were always dangerous and in their half, in their box. But in the end, if you make two easy mistakes, like we did, and make them like four freebies then you can’t win the game.”
