“I saw an anxious team and it’s on us as coaches. We’ve created that environment and we’ll look at that. We were anxious and nervous. They were clinical and showed why they’re the best team in the world and we’ve got to put our hand up. We just weren’t there today. We did things today that I didn’t think we were capable of doing but we’ll fix that.”

Pressed on the atmosphere inside the home dressing room at Wembley, Wayne continued: “They are very, very disappointed.

“I wanted everyone to see the best from our players. And the players did. They’re a very good, talented group of boys but we sold ourselves short today and that’s torture to me.”

The two teams meet again next Saturday at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, before the final match at Headingley on 8 November.
