two cricketers from Australian Women’s national team inappropriately touched by a motorcyclist in Central Indian Indore city, where they played the Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Cricket Australia said on Saturday that the two players were walking from their team hotel to a cafe on Thursday morning when the incident occurred.
“CA can confirm that two members of the Australian women’s team were approached and inappropriately touched by a motorcyclist while visiting a café in Indore. Team security reported the incident to police, who are handling the matter,” the organization said in a statement.
Rajesh Dandotia, Additional District Police Commissioner, Indore, said a man with a long criminal record was arrested within six hours. The man’s full name has not been released.
Australia played twice this week at Holkar Stadium in Indore against – England on wednesday and South Africa On Saturday.
The stadium is run by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, which said it was “deeply saddened and shocked” by the incident.
“No woman should have to endure this kind of trauma and our thoughts and support are with those affected by this tragic incident,” the MPCA said in a statement. “This unfortunate incident has deeply affected everyone at MPCA who values the dignity, safety and respect of women.”
“The city of Indore has earned a proud reputation as a safe venue for visiting teams,” MPCA said.
“It is extremely painful that the disorderly actions of one individual have caused so much damage and tarnished the image of the city. As hosts, the MPCA sincerely apologizes to the Australian women’s team for this extremely sad and unfortunate incident, at a time when our city is known for safety, grace and hospitality.”
