Bengaluru, October 25 (IANS) One person was killed and three others of the same family were injured in an explosion in Bengaluru on Saturday. The impact of the explosion was so severe that the house suffered a lot of damage.
An explosion has been reported in Triveninagar of KR Puram area.
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje visited the spot and inspected. He has also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as 80-year-old Akkayamma. Apart from this, 25 year old Kiran, 52 year old Shekhar and 22 year old Chandana are injured. Chandana has suffered more than 50 percent burns.
Joint Commissioner of Police, Eastern Division, Ramesh Banoth also visited the spot and collected information from the officials.
“The incident occurred around 7.30 am. An elderly woman, who was sleeping, died when a roof slab fell on her. Three others were injured,” he said.
He said, “A woman living in the house at the rear was also injured. Shekhar’s daughter also got injured. We obtained information from them. They said that the explosion occurred when the gas stove was switched on. The young woman gave this statement. However, investigation is being done to determine the exact cause.”
DCP Parashuram of Whitefield division said, “Among the injured, a woman named Chandana has sustained serious injuries. The house where the incident took place has been completely damaged. Three shed houses behind the main house have also been damaged. A woman living in one of the sheds has also been injured.”
“At first glance it appears to be a cylinder blast. A clear picture will emerge after investigation by experts.”
Rajalakshmi, a local resident, said: “Between 7 and 7.10 in the morning, we heard a very loud noise. Since it was Diwali, we thought someone might be bursting crackers. When we came out, we saw that the entire house was damaged.”
“The injured were immediately taken to the hospital with the help of neighbours. The window panes of nearby houses were broken. Four people were living in the same house. A woman living in the house behind was also injured. The sound was heard up to four to five kilometers away.”
Shekhar’s relative Sindhu said, “My brother-in-law, his children and his mother were in the house. In the morning we got a call and were informed about the incident. They all sustained injuries.”
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has demanded a thorough investigation into the massive explosion that took place in Triveninagar in KR Puram assembly constituency of Bengaluru city.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the blast site, he said that an explosion took place in Triveninagar this morning, resulting in the death of a woman and serious damage to the entire house. Expressing concern, he said that a detailed forensic report should be obtained to bring out the truth. “Such incidents create fear among the public,” he said.
The Union Minister stressed, “There must be some reason behind the collapse of such a big and strong house. The investigation will reveal whether the explosion was caused by gas leakage or some other explosive material.” He urged the government to immediately compensate the family of the deceased and ensure free medical treatment for the injured.
He said nearby houses were also affected by the blast and some neighbors were admitted to hospital. “The panes of glass have been broken to a great height,” he remarked with concern. He appreciated the efforts of police officers, fire fighters and local residents who came forward to help.
The minister also appealed to the government to compensate those whose houses were damaged due to the incident. He said the cylinder involved allegedly belonged to Bharat Petroleum and also urged the company to conduct its own investigation.
Former minister and BJP MLA Birthi Basavaraj, who represents KR Puram assembly constituency, said he was shocked after visiting the site of the massive blast in Bengaluru’s Triveninagar.
According to initial investigation, the owner of the building is a person named Ramesh. Shekhar lived in the house. Shekhar’s family had come to live in this house on rent about nine months ago. He was living there with his two children, Chandana and Kiran Kumar, and elderly woman Akkayamma.
