Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress on Saturday criticized the BJP for its lack of outrage and silence over the suicide of a woman doctor in Maharashtra after she was repeatedly raped by police sub-inspector Gopal Badne and intimidated and threatened by an MP in the state.
Minister of State Shashi Panja questioned whether the BJP has become so emotionally bankrupt that its leaders prefer to ignore such a serious incident in a state ruled by their own party and its allies.
Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, the senior Trinamool leader also pointed to the ‘absence’ of national outrage over the incident.
The Trinamool leader said, “We knew that the BJP is politically bankrupt by now. But is the party now emotionally bankrupt too? It did not say anything on the tragic incident in Satara. Where is the voice of the media now? Why are the national news channels silent? If this incident had happened in West Bengal, the whole situation would have worsened with members of the Women’s Commission and Human Rights Commission visiting the state.”
The tragic incident occurred when a doctor working at a government hospital in Satara district of Maharashtra allegedly hanged himself in a hotel room. There was a note on her palm and a four-page suicide letter, in which Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne was accused of repeatedly raping her. Police on Saturday arrested one of the two people from Pune, whose name was mentioned by the doctor in the suicide note written on his palm, officials said.
In the complaint submitted to the police, the woman had alleged that she was being harassed by an MP for providing fake medical reports of people accused in police cases without examining them. He also pointed out the inaction of the police despite repeated complaints of sexual harassment by Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne.
Taking a dig at the National Commission for Women (NCW) and other national agencies, Panja said, “Where are these agencies and the voices crying for justice? They do not visit BJP-ruled states, where there is double engine government? Or are these reserved only for West Bengal? This shows the double standards of the BJP in terms of addressing crimes against women. When it comes to addressing such issues, they are selective.” There are,” said Panja, the state in-charge.
