What’s the deal that means Prince Andrew can stay at the Royal Lodge?
Prince Andrew has lived in the 30-room Royal Lodge mansion in Windsor Great Park for more than 20 years.
A copy of the leasehold agreement shared by the Crown Estate shows Andrew signed a 75-year lease on the property in 2003.
This revealed that he paid £1 million for the lease and since then he has paid “one peppercorn” per year as rent “on demand”.
According to a report by the National Audit Office, they were also required to pay an additional £7.5 million for renovations completed in 2005.
The agreement also included a clause stating that the Crown Estate would have to pay Andrew approximately £558,000 if it gave up the lease.
The Public Accounts Committee is to write to the Crown Estate and the Treasury raising “a number of questions” about the lease of Andrew’s property.

Prince Andrew is reportedly discussing voluntarily leaving the Royal Lodge following the uproar over the “peppercorn” rent for his 30-room mansion.
