Satara: A 26-year-old woman doctor, who allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra’s Satara district, has left behind a detailed four-page suicide note, in addition to an inked note on the palm of her hand, in which she has said that a police officer raped her four times and pressurized her to issue fake fitness certificates of accused in police cases. Now it has come to light in her note that she was allegedly under pressure not only from police officials but also from a Member of Parliament (MP) and his personal assistants.

The woman doctor, who worked as a medical officer at Phaltan sub-district hospital in Satara, also wrote in a note written on the palm of her hand that Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne had raped her four times and subjected her to mental and physical abuse for more than five months.

The woman doctor, a resident of Beed district, had been serving at the hospital for 23 months and was just a month away from completing her bond period for service in the rural area when she took the extreme step out of frustration.

In his four-page suicide note, he wrote that police officials pressured him to issue fake fitness certificates for the accused, many of whom were not even brought for medical examination. She said in her note that when she refused to comply, she would be harassed by sub-inspector Gopal Badne and others.

She said, “The reason for my death is Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne who raped me and who, posing as Prashant, tortured me mentally and physically for 4 months.”

Gopal Badne is a police officer, while Prashant Bankar is the son of the landlord where the doctor lived.

She complained to various authorities 21 times, but no action was taken against those who tortured her.

Referring to a particular instance in his note, the doctor said he had refused to issue the certificate and two personal assistants of an MP had come to the hospital and made him talk to her over the phone. He said in his note that during that conversation the MP had indirectly threatened him.

His cousin also made similar allegations against the doctor of fudging medical certificates.

“He had complained two-three times. Despite writing letters to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), no action was taken,” he told media persons.

He further said, “In the letter he asked who would be responsible if anything happened to him? He also pointed out the lack of security in the hospital premises, but nothing happened. He also called the DSP, who said he would call him back, but no one took any action.”

A case has been registered against both the accused, Badne and Bankar, under charges of rape and abetment of suicide and the police officer has been suspended, especially after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took cognizance of the case and directed the Satara Superintendent of Police to take strict action against the accused.

Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur Division) Sunil Phulari said, “We are investigating the case based on the evidence collected so far. A case has been registered in Satara district. The police officer involved in the case has been suspended.”

The opposition has criticized the Maharashtra government, accusing it of protecting police officers.

Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) said that in this case the protector has become the predator.

Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, “The duty of the police is to protect, but if they themselves are exploiting a female doctor, how will justice be served? Why was no action taken when this girl had filed a complaint earlier? The Mahayuti government repeatedly protects the police, leading to increasing police atrocities.”

He further said, “Merely ordering an investigation in this case is not enough. The police officers allegedly responsible for taking such a drastic step by the woman doctor should be dismissed from the job, otherwise they can influence the investigation. Why was her earlier complaint not taken seriously? Those who ignored it and those who saved these police officers should face action. Unless action is taken against the police, police atrocities will not be curbed.”

Former leader of opposition in the state council and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve condemned the incident and criticized the state government.

“The accused in the Phaltan suicide case go away, and then the Chief Minister orders “strict” action. The suicide of a daughter of Marathwada who has been struggling since birth to move ahead is a sign of the protector turning into the predator. A woman who has taken the vow of public service has to endure such mental torture and meet such an unfortunate end. Our demand is that the government should form an independent inquiry committee consisting of officials from outside Satara district. Its There should be a thorough investigation,” he said.
