Imphal, Oct 24 (IANS) The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Nagas in Manipur, has declared ‘Gena’, a traditional day of honor and celebration to honor the upcoming civil felicitation ceremony of NSCN-IM supremo Thuingaleng Muivah, which is scheduled to be held on October 29 at the Senapati district headquarters.
‘Gena’, in Naga culture and customs, refers to restrictions to ensure maximum participation when a national holiday or an important day for the community is celebrated.
During this time, members of the Naga community abstain from routine activities to observe customs and celebrate their collective identity. In honor of the occasion, the UNC has directed that all educational institutions and shops in Naga-inhabited areas will remain closed.
Announcing ‘Genna’, UNC President NG Lorho said in a statement that in reverence to our traditions and cultural practices, the Nagas in present-day Manipur state, declare Genna on the occasion of historic civic reception in honor of the living legend Muivah at Tahamjam (Senapati) on October 29.
The UNC chief said, “During this ‘Genna’, we call upon all community members to declare holidays in all educational institutions, and shops will remain closed as a mark of respect. Also abstain from all economic and commercial activities. Participate in community functions and events to celebrate the occasion. Maintain the Naga spirit of unity and solidarity.”
Nagagenarian leader Muivah, who is also the Ato Kilonsar (Prime Minister) of the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), first reached Manipur’s Naga-inhabited Ukhtar district on Wednesday (October 22). 50 years.
The NSCN-IM supremo is now staying in Somdal village and will return to Dimapur on October 29 via Manipur’s Senapati district.
Thousands of Nagas from all sections, dressed in traditional attire and carrying NSCN-IM flags, welcomed Muivah after Muivah’s helicopter landed at Bakshi Maidan in Ukhrul district headquarters from Dimapur in Nagaland.
A large number of Naga men, holding traditional spears and wearing traditional caps, came to the venue to welcome Muivah, the key negotiator in the Naga peace talks with the central government since the entry of the NSCN-IM into ceasefire in 1997.
Influential Naga body Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) organized all the arrangements for the much-awaited visit of Muivah and his associates to Ukhrul district.
