A woman is under police observation in hospital in a life-threatening condition following the death of a nine-year-old girl and injuries to two other children.
Police were called to a property in Middle Street, Islip, at 11.15am on Tuesday after reports of three children being assaulted.
A nine-year-old girl in the Oxfordshire village was pronounced dead at the scene, while a boy and a girl were taken to hospital for treatment and later released, a Thames Valley Police spokesman said.
He said: “A post-mortem has been carried out but the cause of death has not been determined pending further investigation.
“The girl’s family are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers and have requested privacy at this difficult time.”
Detective Inspector Amy Fox said the 49-year-old woman remains in hospital and no one else is being sought in connection with the incident.
She said: “First and foremost, our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy and we are doing everything we can to support those affected.
“A 49-year-old woman from Oxfordshire was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition and is currently under police observation.
“At this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
“The scene at the property has now ended, but officers will remain in the area throughout the weekend, and we encourage anyone with concerns or information to speak with them.
“This remains an extremely sensitive and complex investigation. I want to sincerely thank the community for their understanding and patience as we work to uncover the full circumstances.”
