NFL reminds players of league gambling policy in light of federal indictments

nfl on Friday reminded its players that they are banned from participating in any form of illegal gambling and betting in league games.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, the league on Friday asked all 32 teams to reiterate key aspects of their gambling policy and make the document readily available to players.

“We all have a responsibility to protect the integrity of the Shield by ensuring that our game is played fairly, honestly and to the best of the player’s ability,” the NFL Management Council wrote in the memo. “NFL players must take appropriate steps to protect the game from gambling-related risks that could undermine fan trust and confidence.”

“These developments underscore the risks that all sports face in the current environment and remind us of the need to strictly adhere to the NFL Gambling Policy,” the NFL wrote.

According to NFL policy, players must not:

-Place any bet on NFL football;

-Throwing or fixing any NFL game or event, or otherwise manipulating or attempting to manipulate any play or other aspect of any NFL game;

-Share confidential, non-public information regarding any NFL game, player or event with any third party.

The NFL Players Association sent a similar memo to players on Friday, telling them they should not place bets on the NFL, gamble at the team facility or while traveling to a road game or stay at a team hotel, have someone place bets for them, share “inside information”, enter a sportsbook during NFL game season other than accessing another part of the casino, or engage in any form of gambling or gambling. Gambling unit should be promoted.

NFL players are legally allowed to bet on other sports, as long as they are off club property or traveling with the team. They are also allowed to participate in traditional fantasy football leagues (prize money cannot exceed $250) and gamble legally in casinos at individual times.
