Chandigarh, Oct 24 (IANS) Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh on Friday said the functioning of the police will be completely changed, but underlined that indiscipline or misconduct will not be tolerated and warned that if anyone retaliates or attacks the police, they will get an immediate and appropriate response.

“Police must now become proactive, solution-oriented, coordinated and citizen-centric. Along with this, the living and working conditions of police personnel will also be improved,” the DGP said while chairing a meeting with all commissioners of police (CP), superintendents of police (SP) and station house officers (SHOs) in Panchkula near here.

The DGP directed Haryana Police Housing Corporation (HPHC) officials to ensure that all police stations and outposts are upgraded within two weeks.

“Kitchens, toilets, electrical wiring and security systems should be repaired and improved.” He emphasized that every police station should look clean, safe and orderly.

“My most important objective is to keep the Haryana Police in a tight and functional state,” DGP Singh was quoted as saying in an official statement.

“Mistakes in the line of duty are natural, but indiscipline or misconduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.” He said that Haryana Police remains on duty 24×7 for 365 days of the year in the service of the public. “I can’t see any of our policemen being harmed – we are not here to die, but to serve and protect the people.”

“If any criminal breaks the law, he will be sent behind the bars as per the legal process, but if anyone retaliates or attacks the police, he will get immediate and appropriate response. Haryana Police stands as a strong shield between the citizens and the criminals.”

The DGP directed that the families of martyred police personnel should get immediate assistance as per rules.

“There should be no delay and a report on their status should be submitted every 15 days. No work related to the martyr families should be left pending.”

The DGP directed all district officers to conduct regular field visits, interact with police personnel and boost their morale. He stressed that polite behavior with the public is important.

Police officers should use simple, polite words like “please, sorry, thank you” – this will improve the image of the police and strengthen public confidence.

DGP said that now the police will have to be active on social media. Officials should keep an eye on those spreading rumors or misinformation against the police from the very beginning. All police stations and outposts should work together and make joint strategies to reduce crime in their surrounding areas.

Haryana Police Academy Director Arshinder Chawla has been directed to provide practical training to new sub-inspectors so that they learn policing in real life instead of adopting the “filmy” approach. The DGP directed that officers posted in sensitive areas should not take leave without prior notice.

“The SHO has to inform the IG before taking leave, and the SP has to inform the ADG (law and order).” DGP Singh concluded by saying that the goal of Haryana Police is clear – every policeman should be safe, every citizen should live without any fear, and every police station should stand as a symbol of public trust.
