Bhubaneswar: Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania on Friday said the primary objective of the Odisha Police in the coming days is to dismantle human trafficking networks in the state through advanced use of information technology, digital tracking, data analytics and surveillance.
Inaugurating a state-level workshop on human trafficking, DGP Khurania said: “In the present scenario, human trafficking is a very serious and worrying issue not only for Odisha but for the entire country. With the coordinated efforts of the judiciary, police, women and child protection units, labor department, voluntary organizations and all individuals of the society, we will succeed in controlling this shameful act.”
Khurania also urged all stakeholders to work together to transform Odisha into a model state in the fight against human trafficking. He said that human trafficking is not only a crime but also a violation of basic human rights.
Khurania said, “Human trafficking is not just a crime; it is a serious violation of human rights. It deprives women, children and youth in particular of their dignity, freedom and future. In Odisha, examples of human trafficking are seen in the form of sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic child labour, and trafficking of young women under the pretext of jobs or marriage.”
The DGP stressed that the role of Integrated Anti Human Trafficking Units (IAHTUs) and District Labor Officers is important in combating human trafficking. He described IAHTU officials as the backbone of efforts related to investigation and victim rescue.
Khurania said Odisha Police plans to further strengthen IAHTU by increasing human resources, providing specialized training and enhancing technical knowledge and professional skills.
Furthermore, the State Police is maintaining close coordination with other States to implement effective measures to curb human trafficking.
It is noteworthy that Odisha Police has rescued 1,209 children under its special operation ‘Operation Anvilshan’ – which includes 131 boys and 1,078 girls.
