Ernakulam, Oct 24 (IANS) President Draupadi Murmu on Friday praised the women of Kerala for leading the nation and recalled the contribution of 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly, including three from the southern state, who added rich perspectives to the framing of India’s Constitution.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of St Teresa’s College in Ernakulam, the President said, “Three of those 15 outstanding women were from Kerala. Ammu Swaminathan, Annie Mascarene and Dakshinayani Velayudan had influenced the deliberations on fundamental rights, social justice and gender equality as well as many other important aspects.”

Justice Anna Chandy was the first woman to become a High Court judge in India. In 1956, she became a judge in the Kerala High Court. The President said, Justice M. Fatima Beevi created history by becoming the first woman judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1989.

He said that St. Teresa’s College is promoting women’s education in India with a strong commitment to spiritual values.

He said, “It is a great contribution to social transformation and nation-building. We must deeply acknowledge the vision and legacy of the distinguished personalities who built this institution and led it through a century of sustained achievements.”

The President said that the talented students of St. Teresa’s College represent Young India, Prosperous India and Vibrant India.

He underlined that active participation of women is necessary to reap the benefits of the country’s demographic dividend.

Murmu also highlighted that gender budget allocation has increased four and a half times during the last decade.

“Women-led MSMEs almost double between 2011 and 2024. One of the key pillars to achieve the vision of a developed India by 2047 is to achieve 70 per cent female workforce participation,” he said.

Women from different socio-economic sectors are driving India’s progress. He was happy to note that the alumni of this college are playing a positive role through their contribution in the growth and development of the country.
