Ahmedabad, Oct 24 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Gujarat, predicting light to moderate rain over the next seven days, with the intensity of rain expected to increase within the next 48 hours.
It has also predicted thunderstorms for the next four days, especially in the southern and coastal areas of the state.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely over the districts of South Gujarat including Dangs, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad and adjoining parts of Maharashtra.
The weather department further said that this rainfall activity may extend to the Union Territory of Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, while most other districts of Gujarat are expected to experience dry conditions with no significant fluctuations in temperatures.
With rain and thundershowers predicted over Gujarat and Saurashtra, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to possible rough weather conditions. The weather is expected to remain cloudy in Ahmedabad in the coming days.
Light to moderate rain is expected in Surat, Dangs, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch and Daman as well as Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir-Somnath and Diu of Saurashtra on Saturday. The extent of rain is expected to increase on Sunday, affecting Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara and surrounding districts.
By Monday, many parts of central and southern Gujarat – including Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dangs, Tapi and Navsari, as well as Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir-Somnath, Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli – may receive light to moderate rain as the unseasonal weather conditions continue. State.
Gujarat has recorded nearly 90 per cent of the long period average (LPA) rainfall till the end of August, with the total seasonal rainfall being around 792.93 mm, while the normal rainfall is below 882 mm. In different regions, the percentage varies: South Gujarat has 93.7 per cent of normal, East-Central has about 88.6 per cent, Saurashtra has 84.3 per cent and Kutch has 85.1 per cent.
By early September, some data showed that the statewide average had climbed above 100 per cent of the LPA – for example, 102.89 per cent as of a certain date, nearly 108 per cent in South Gujarat, 107 per cent in North Gujarat and 91 per cent in Saurashtra.
