Sagar, October 24 (IANS) People belonging to Dalit families in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh complain that following a dispute over bursting firecrackers on the occasion of Diwali, a group of people from the Rajput (Kshatriya) community entered their houses and beat them up.
According to information, the incident took place in Kesli village of Sagar district and the matter came to light when a group of Dalits, including women, met the Superintendent of Police (SP) on Thursday and submitted a written complaint.
One of the complainants who came to Sagar SP’s office said that children of Dalit families were bursting firecrackers to celebrate Diwali, due to which the Thakur family in the village was angry.
“They entered our houses and beat us up. They also misbehaved and abused women and threatened us with dire consequences,” the complainant said.
In a video that surfaced on social media, Pinky Ahirwar, one of the women from the Dalit community, expressed concern over the safety of women in the area and said that women and children of Dalit families are being tortured in Kesli village of Sagar district.
In a video, she was also heard asking Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, “Where should women from Dalit families in Kesli village hide to save themselves?”
“They (Rajputs) are entering our houses and molesting us and violating our honour. Chief Minister sir, please tell us where we should hide for our safety because dear sisters are not safe here,” he said in the video.
A police officer from Sagar SP office told IANS that complaints have been received from the Dalit community and the local area police has been directed to investigate.
The incident comes three days after a Dalit man in Madhya Pradesh was kidnapped, beaten and allegedly forced to drink urine by three men in Gwalior. The victim has been identified as Sonu Barua, a resident of Bhind district, who was allegedly beaten up after he refused to work as a driver.
After meeting the victim in the hospital, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Pathak had said that an FIR has been registered and the three accused have been arrested and sent to jail.
“Some people from his village brought him to Bhind and assaulted him. A case has been registered and three people have been arrested,” he said.
