Lando Norris has expressed his amusement after Red Bull was fined €50,000 for attempting to remove tape marking his grid position at the United States Grand Prix.

McLaren had installed tape to assist Norris with car alignment. The FIA imposed the fine because a Red Bull team member remained on the grid beyond the allowed time, not for removing the tape.

This strategy is believed to have occurred in several races, with Norris saying that McLaren “got the last laugh.”

“I didn’t use tape, so it was extra entertaining,” he said.

“I didn’t need it. We put it in there just in case. It’s extra funny that they got a fine for it and I didn’t even need it.

“They tried to take it off and failed. We made it a special way so they couldn’t even take it off. So just entertaining. Side quests to entertain the teams. But I think we were the ones laughing about it.”

It is difficult to recognize the lines on the grid that show a driver where to align their car, with some teams and drivers finding different markers to help them get it right.

“They’ve tried to pull it off at Monza and probably a few other places,” Norris said. “We made it like an F1 (car parking) pass, so you never get out the window.”

Seven-time world champion Hamilton controversially lost to Verstappen in a fierce title scrap in 2021 and the Dutchman has won three championships since then.

His bid for a fifth consecutive crown appeared to be over when he left Zandvoort in August, 104 points behind leader Piastri.

But Verstappen has won three of the four races since then and is now just 40 points behind the Australian – while Norris himself is 14 points behind his McLaren team-mate.

With five rounds remaining and 141 points to go before this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix, Verstappen has emerged as a genuine title threat.

And Hamilton knows more than most what a fearsome opponent the McLaren pair face as they bid to win the drivers’ championship for the first time.

“The pressure is immense. This is a time when you have to put your blinkers on and block out everything coming in from outside. There’s a lot coming in, positive and negative,” Ferrari driver Hamilton told Sky Sports.

“Plus, you have to be really cutthroat and that’s what Max is. If they don’t do that he’ll take it away from them.

“They have to push and you have to dig deep first to be able to catch someone like Max in the car he is in at the moment.

“But consistency is key for either one of them to come forward and we’ve seen that from Max in the last few races.”
