On October 23, The national capital is set to see artificial rain for the first time through cloud seeding, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced as preparations for the ambitious pollution-control initiative are complete.
A successful trial of the project was conducted in Burari area earlier in the day, Gupta said in a post on Twitter.
“For the first time in Delhi, preparations for inducing artificial rain through cloud seeding have been completed, marking an important technological milestone in the capital’s fight against air pollution. Experts successfully conducted a trial run in Burari area on Thursday.
His post read, “According to the weather department, it is expected to be cloudy on October 28, 29 and 30. If the weather remains favourable, Delhi is likely to receive its first artificial rain on October 29.”
The cloud-seeding project jointly developed by IIT-Kanpur and the Delhi government aims to explore artificial rainfall as a method of reducing particle-pollution levels in the city during the post-Diwali haze season.
The much-awaited artificial rain experiment in Delhi was to be conducted on July 4, but it was postponed.
The project, approved by 23 departments including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aims to find out whether artificial rain can be a viable solution to deal with rising pollution levels during winter.
The project is being conducted in coordination with experts from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
