Kolkata, Oct 23 (IANS) Supporters of a BJP MLA have been accused of vandalizing a camp set up for filing applications for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Kalyani area of Nadia district, which was opened by Union Minister Shantanu Thakur.
However, BJP MLA Ambika Roy has denied such allegations. He said that he was not present there at the time of the incident and said that BJP has no connection with that camp office.
According to sources, the CAA support camp office was opened in the area adjacent to the BJP party office ‘Shyama Prasad Bhawan’ in the Central Park of Kalyani. The office was inaugurated by Shantanu Thakur on 22 October. However, on Thursday morning, followers of Kalyani MLA Ambika Roy attacked the camp office. The office was vandalized and furniture was broken. Some people present there were also beaten.
A person named Rohan Sao was injured in the incident. He said, “The MLA’s men attacked without provocation. They beat us badly. A total of five of us were injured. We were helping people at the camp office, which was inaugurated by Shantanu Thakur.”
Meanwhile, the BJP MLA said, “Many people were drinking there at night and committing anti-social acts. When the locals protested, a scuffle broke out. I have heard that there was a minor clash. BJP has no connection with this incident. Our workers did not vandalize the camp.”
However, the incident has raised questions over the growing infighting between the two camps of the BJP.
BJP’s Bangaan organizational district president Vikas Ghosh said, “This is not a party programme. There is no issue of group conflict. There has been some misunderstanding at the local level.”
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress took a dig at the BJP over the incident. Ranaghat organizational district president of the party, Debashish Gangopadhyay said, “The MP group and the MLA group are engaged in a mutual fight for their own interests. Miscreants from both sides have messed with each other. Police will take action as per law.
