New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva on Thursday said due to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s eight-month-long efforts, the Yamuna water is now suitable for taking a dip and pure enough for ‘aachman’ (ritual drinking), as a party colleague of his said.
Referring to the huge improvement in the quality of the polluted river water in the first eight months of CM Gupta’s government, Sachdeva said that Delhi government’s determined and honest efforts to clean the Yamuna have resulted in Delhi BJP spokesperson and environment expert Anil Gupta performing achaman (drank the holy water) of the Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj and ITO ghat in front of journalists.
He said Anil Gupta not only cleaned the Yamuna water live on TV, but also presented online monitoring data, which proved that as a result of the eight-month-long cleaning efforts of the Rekha Gupta government, the Yamuna water has no foul smell, its oxygen level is between 4.5 and 5.5, and its pH is 7.5 – which is close to normal.
He said that on October 25, 2024, 10 days before Chhath Puja, he had taken a dip in the Yamuna at ITO Ghat in Delhi to highlight the plight of the river before the world.
“The world saw the Yamuna become like a dirty drain and that dip sent me to the hospital,” he said in a statement.
He said his dip in the ITO last year had also exposed the alleged looting by the Aam Aadmi Party government and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the name of cleaning the Yamuna.
Delhi BJP President said that whether it is Yamuna Maiya or Chhath Maiya, Arvind Kejriwal government committed corruption in her name and today because of that corruption his AAP party is not in power.
The development related to improving the quality of river water comes close to Delhi’s Art, Culture and Languages Minister Kapil Mishra’s announcement that Chhath Puja will be celebrated at over 1,000 places across Delhi.
Earlier in the week, Mishra held a meeting with Purvanchal Morcha and reviewed preparations for ‘Chhath Puja 2025’.
He told Purvanchal Morcha president Santosh Ojha and other members of the Morcha that this year Chhath Puja will be the most massive celebration ever in the city.
