Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (IANS) Sambalpur police in Odisha on Thursday arrested two fraudsters for duping around 2,000 people of around Rs 2 crore under the pretext of facilitating the victims for jobs related to cleaning and sanitation works in various government offices in Sambalpur municipality areas.
The accused persons have been identified as Samrat Ray alias Rahul, 32, of Kshetrarajpur area and Padmalaya Tandi alias Padmavati, 34, of Burla area of Sambalpur district.
The fraudsters were defrauding innocent victims through a fake company ‘Rmax Private Limited’.
Speaking to media persons, Sambalpur Superintendent of Police, Mukesh Kumar Bhamu on Thursday revealed that after receiving intelligence regarding the fraud from various sources, the Sambalpur district police had kept a watch on the activities of fraudsters for the last few months.
On Wednesday, police personnel raided a suspicious job fair and took the accused Samrat and Padmalaya into custody.
Sambalpur SP Bhamu said, “Initially they held small meetings at the village level with the attendance of 15 to 20 people. Later, they started organizing bigger meetings in which the number of participants increased each time. Yesterday, we picked them up and during interrogation, we learned that they were involved in fraud.”
Sambalpur SP also informed that Rs 62 lakh and two vehicles have been recovered from the possession of the fraudsters.
The accused persons allegedly formed a fake company named “Rmax Private Limited”. And falsely claimed that it was authorized to provide appointments for cleaning and sanitation work.
He held meetings in different areas and collected Rs 12,000 from each person, promising to employ them with a daily wage of Rs 400.
When the complainant and others asked for appointment letters and other official documents, the accused persons failed to provide them on the pretext that the documents would be given later.
During verification, it was found that the work of the fake firm was not done by any government agency. They are involved in criminal activities since October 2024.
