Chandigarh, October 23 (IANS) In a major breakthrough, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police has arrested Krishna Gopal along with his son Keshav in connection with the firing at a jewelery shop in Hoshiarpur. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Thursday.
Police have recovered a .32 caliber pistol with cartridges from their possession and have also seized the motorcycle on which they were riding.
DGP Yadav said the arrested pair were involved in the targeted firing at Ganpati Jewellers, which took place on October 18 when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at the premises.
He said that after the attack, the shop owner received a threatening call from an unknown foreign number and a ransom of Rs 20 lakh was demanded.
A case was registered at Mahilpur police station under sections 336, 324 (4) and 3 (5) of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) and section 25 of the Arms Act.
The DGP said that further investigation in the matter is going on.
Sharing operational details, Additional Director General of Police (AGTF) Promod Ban said that after the attack on the jewelery shop, police teams of AGTF and Hoshiarpur district police under the supervision of DIG Sandeep Goyal and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Malik jointly conducted human and technical investigation and identified the suspects.
Acting promptly, teams of AGTF Punjab and Hoshiarpur Police intercepted the suspects at Mahdudpur village in Hoshiarpur district, where they fired indiscriminately at the police party to escape, but were subdued after a brief exchange of fire. A new FIR has been registered at Police Station Mahilpur under sections 109, 221, 132 and 3 (5) of the BNS and section 25 of the Arms Act.
Earlier in the day, in an intelligence-based operation, Amritsar Commissionerate Police busted a cross-border drug trafficking module linked to Pakistan and arrested drug kingpin Rajpal Singh and recovered 5.025 kg of heroin.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested accused was running a cross-border network linked to Pakistan-based handlers and was using Dera Baba Nanak sector to receive drug consignments.
