Vadakara, Oct 23 (IANS) Congress MP Shafi Parambil, who was beaten by Kerala Police while attending a protest meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency in Vadakara earlier this month, on Thursday vowed that his legal fight will continue and all the evidence will be handed over to the Privileges Committee of Parliament.

Appearing before the media for the first time after undergoing rhinoplasty following the police crackdown on him, Parambil said there was no need for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s “AI tool” to identify the person who attacked him in Perambara, Kozhikode.

“It was Vadakara control room circle inspector Abhilash David who attacked me that day. Abhilash David was suspended on January 16, 2023, over alleged links with the mafia. Later reports said he was dismissed from service, although his profile no longer appears on the police website,” Parambil said.

He also alleged that David, along with two others who had been dismissed earlier, had been reinstated in service.

Parambil alleged, “The attack in Perambara was carried out to divert attention from the Sabarimala gold theft issue. It was a planned action by the police.”

He said, “I was injured when a grenade exploded in the hand of a police officer. I was trying to stop the clash and the visuals are proof of it. Despite being severely beaten, I did not immediately go to the hospital, I stayed there to pacify the activists.”

He said even the SP, who initially denied the attack, later changed his statement.

The injured Congress MP said, “They had claimed that the AI tool would identify the culprits and action would be taken, but nothing happened. The SP stopped the investigation under pressure from the CPI-M. I have not even been formally questioned yet. Any action was taken only after the video byte of the rural SP surfaced.”

According to him, one officer hit him twice and the third hit was blocked by another.

He said, “There was no stone pelting or clash at that time. The grenade exploded in the hand of a policeman when Deputy SP Hariprasad was trying to attack me with a baton. The police later issued a circular for grenade-handling training because Kozhikode Rural Police did not know how to use them properly. Grenades are not meant to be thrown into the crowd.”

Meanwhile, David refuted Parambil’s claim, saying that he has not been sacked but only suspended

He said, “I was reinstated 22 months ago. I had then seen media reports claiming that I had been dismissed, but they were wrong.”
