Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 23 (IANS) In a rare and heart-touching moment, President Draupadi Murmu, who is on a visit to Kerala, on Thursday stepped out of her convoy to personally welcome a group of school children who had gathered on the roadside near the famous Sivagiri Math in Varkala to catch a glimpse of her.

When the President’s convoy passed, students wearing NCC uniforms and carrying yellow flowers in their hands were waving enthusiastically.

They were surprised to see that the convoy suddenly stopped.

The security personnel quickly came out and signaled that the President herself would get down from her vehicle.

What happened next was an unexpected but touching scene. Smiling and waving, President Murmu moved towards the group of children and talked to them.

He accepted the yellow flowers offered by the students, pausing to exchange a few words.

This simple gesture brought obvious joy to the young audience and their teachers.

“We never thought that the President would actually get out of the car and walk towards us. We were waiting with flowers that we had grown in our school garden,” said a teacher who was deeply touched by the meeting.

One student enthused, “We were thrilled and completely surprised when she came up to us and took the flowers from us. It’s something we’ll never forget.”

Another student said the president told them, “We will meet again.”

This brief conversation lasted only a few minutes but it left a lasting impression on everyone present.

Local residents and officials accompanying the convoy described it as a genuine, unscripted moment that reflected the humility and warmth of President Murmu.

Their visit to Sivagiri Math, an important spiritual center founded by social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, continued after an impromptu conversation, but for the children, it was a day that will be remembered throughout their lives.

Murmu’s stay in the state capital ended on Thursday evening after staying here for the last two days.

She has a function in Kottayam in the evening and will spend the night in the famous tourist spot Kumarakom. Her visit will end on Friday, when she will return to Delhi from Kochi after another ceremony.
