How we tested
We snoozed at work to decide if the Emma Pillow was the answer to our wildest dreams. We asked front, side and back sleepers to take it to bed to see if it really suited everyone, and even put it on their back for a morning read.
We tested for comfort, how well it kept aches and pains away and how well we slept, as well as whether we woke up feeling well-rested.

firmness and comfort
the choice is yours. The pillow comes with three different layers of foam and memory foam, which you can change around to find the right level of comfort or even remove completely if you prefer a lower height.
The layers are surprisingly space-age and include a strong pressure-free viscoelastic memory foam developed by astrophysicists to evenly distribute weight across your head, back and shoulders. Next, there’s a firmly supportive HRX (High Resiliency Extra) hyper-soft cold foam that keeps your spine evenly aligned while a final ultra-breathable, open-pore layer of AirgoCell memory foam absorbs moisture to keep you cool and dry and mimics the soft support of a feather pillow.
Still confused? Us too. Once we took it out of the surprisingly small box, we found we needed to spend a few nights working out the best combination to suit our sleeping patterns and the level of firmness we preferred. The pillow unfolds easily so you can add and remove layers as needed. We ultimately decided to use it without the HRX layer, which proved a little solid for our tastes.

Once we settled on our ideal combination, we slept like babies. The pillow was extremely comfortable and never overheated us. The breathable, pitted outer shell felt supremely comfortable and worked a treat at wicking away heat and optimizing air circulation for a dreamy sleeping temperature.
sleeping position
This is where the Emma Pillow is really clever. Adjustable layers mean this pillow will work whether you prefer to snooze on your side, back, or front. Emma suggests that side sleepers should use all three layers to support spinal alignment, while back sleepers may prefer fewer or softer layers. Those suffering from neck pain should try combining the memory foam with the HRX Cold Foam for maximum pressure relief and support, while front sleepers can adjust the pillow to the height that best suits them, or even use it under their stomach.
With the two layers we chose, we found that the pillow supported our head and neck in just the right position, providing relief from mild pain while working at a computer all day. We also noticed that we slept deeper than usual and woke up feeling unusually refreshed, even on dark winter mornings. Our restless sleeper found it a little difficult to choose the right combination of layers, but ultimately decided on two layers of memory foam and said they had never slept better.

Allergies
If you suffer from any type of respiratory allergies caused by down or feathers then the Emma pillow is a great choice as the foam is naturally hypoallergenic and will not cause any problems so you can breathe easily. Although the chemicals used in some memory foam pillows have been known to cause rare irritation, this pillow is non-toxic so you won’t have any problems. It is also certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1, which means it has been tested for harmful substances and is harmless to human health.
environmental friendliness
Memory foam is difficult to recycle so it is not the best choice for the environment. We would love to see a little more information on sustainability issues on Emma’s website. However, the pillow doesn’t use feathers or down, so it’s suitable for vegans, and if you buy direct Emma plants a tree for every order.
care
The elasticized polyester outer cover is easy to open and put in the washing machine at a maximum of 60 degrees. The pillow itself should not be washed, although the foam layers will return to normal after drying if anything is spilled on them.

If you’re particularly clumsy with your morning cuppa, you might consider using a pillow protector for added reassurance.
price
Although the price of this pillow fluctuates, it generally offers great value, especially when you’re at home so you can make changes to suit your needs rather than being stuck with a pillow that isn’t quite right. This is a safe option and a boon for all sleepers if you suffer from neck or back pain.
